UK teens launch petition to ban school uniforms from pornographic content
Two 15-year-old members of a Little Feminist Book Club in Bicester have started a petition to stop school uniforms being used in pornography.
Aylin and Mae, two fifteen-year-old members of their school's Little Feminist Book Club in Bicester, Oxfordshire, discovered that school uniforms are being sold in sex shops and featured in pornographic material. In response, they launched a petition demanding a ban on the use of school uniforms in pornography, referencing a 2018 Plan International report that found 35% of surveyed girls aged 14 to 21 faced unwanted sexual attention while wearing their uniforms.
The petition, which has gathered more than 24,000 signatures as of early October, has attracted media attention and the backing of two members of parliament. The students argue that uniforms, intended to promote equality and community, are being sexualised and that a legal ban is needed to protect young people. They reject suggestions that longer skirts would solve the problem, emphasizing that responsibility lies with those who sexualise the uniforms. The campaign aims to push the issue onto the parliamentary agenda.
Why it matters
