UK toddler undergoes pioneering nitinol spring surgery for rare skull disorder
One-year-old Rory Potter received the world’s first operation using nitinol springs to treat severe sagittal craniosynostosis.
Rory Potter, a one-year-old from Chesterfield, Derbyshire, was diagnosed shortly after birth with severe sagittal craniosynostosis, a condition that can cause learning and sensory problems if untreated. Doctors at Great Ormond Street Hospital, in collaboration with University College London, used a novel set of nitinol springs—the first of their kind—to gently expand his skull. Neurosurgeon Owase Jeelani led the 45-minute procedure, after which Rory stayed overnight before returning home.
Over nine weeks the springs reshaped his skull, after which they were removed, delivering a successful outcome. Biomedical engineer Silvia Schievano highlighted the years of research behind the technology, noting its potential to reduce the need for larger surgeries and blood transfusions. Rory’s parents praised the team’s care and the innovative approach that gave their son a normal childhood trajectory.
