Łukasz Gibała wins Kraków mayoral race, vows transparency and transport reforms
Łukasz Gibała defeated Monika Piątkowska in Kraków's mayoral election and promised to open municipal records and improve public transport.
Łukasz Gibała secured the mayoralty of Kraków after beating Monika Piątkowska, the candidate supported by KO and PSL, in the runoff election. Speaking on RMF24, Gibała said he will conduct a thorough audit of municipal assets and make the findings publicly available. He outlined a three-pronged fiscal strategy: identify savings that do not affect residents, broaden the tax base by encouraging unregistered inhabitants to register, and introduce a tourist levy.
On the service side, he committed to more frequent bus and tram services and a return to a previous ticket tariff. Gibała also indicated he wants to meet Piątkowska promptly to discuss cooperation, and he announced a referendum on the scope of the Clean Transport Zone to be held early next year, offering a reduced-area option and a more ambitious city-wide version.
Why it matters
The new mayor's transparency and transport plans could reshape Kraków's finances and daily life for residents.
