Ukraine boosts jet-drone interception but US satellite cuts expose reliance

Ukraine says its air defence now stops about three-quarters of Russian jet-powered drones, though recent Starshield outages briefly lowered success rates.

Ukraine reports that its air-defence units are now intercepting around 74-80% of Russia’s jet-powered Shahed drones, a marked rise from about 60% in early September. The boost is attributed to newer interceptor drones, but the performance dipped during a Starshield satellite outage between 14 and 24 October, temporarily lowering the overall rate. The US-run service was restored on 24 October, highlighting Kyiv’s reliance on American communications for high-speed engagements.

Experts warn that maintaining these rates will require mass production of affordable, AI-guided interceptor drones such as the under-development F-Jet 80, which aims for a $7,000 unit cost. Ukraine also continues to use F-16 fighters and ground-based guns, but these methods are costly or resource-intensive. The push for cheaper interceptors is seen as essential as Russia expands its use of fast drones ahead of winter.

Why it matters

Sustaining high interception rates is crucial for Ukraine’s defence against an escalating Russian drone threat.
