Ukraine Deploys AI-Powered Automated Turrets to Shoot Down Russian Jet Drones
Ukraine has begun using AI-driven robotic gun turrets to intercept fast jet-powered Russian drones over Kyiv, according to its air force.
In response to a surge of Russian jet-powered drones that outpace older Shahed-type UAVs, Ukraine has fielded AI-controlled robotic gun turrets on bridges in Kyiv. Air force spokesperson Colonel Yuri Ignat reported successful shoot-downs of the larger Geran-5 drones using the new system, which relies on optical sensors and artificial-intelligence algorithms to aim and fire without direct human input. Technology adviser Sergiy Beskrestnov described the turrets as an innovative Ukrainian solution that pairs machine guns with AI control, and confirmed that twelve units are currently deployed in the capital.
The turrets can engage targets within roughly one kilometre and are most effective when attack angles and weather conditions are suitable. Officials emphasized that the devices are a component of a broader, layered air-defence network rather than a standalone fix, and that Ukraine continues to integrate AI across its military operations.
Why it matters
The deployment shows Ukraine's rapid tech adaptation to counter a growing Russian drone threat.
