Ukraine deploys drone-dropped combat robots behind Russian lines in unprecedented assault

Ukraine's Third Army Corps announced it has become the first force to air-drop armed ground robots from heavy drones deep into Russian-held territory during Operation Vivaldi.

In a rare disclosure, Brig. Gen. Andrii Biletskyi revealed that Ukraine's Third Army Corps has pioneered the first combat air-drop of ground robots from heavy drones, sending them roughly six miles into Russian-controlled areas as part of Operation Vivaldi. The operation, named Gryphon after a soldier missing near Andriivka, is carried out by the NC13 unit of the Third Assault Brigade, commanded by Mykola Zinkevych, who described the robots being released behind enemy lines rather than driven across the front.

A second effort by the Alter Ego robot battalion of the 93rd Mechanized Brigade produced the Desantnyk robot and a drop mechanism in just ten days, according to the state-backed innovation platform Brave1. Defence firms, including TAF Industries, are now focusing on integrating bomber drones with UGVs to create scalable, unmanned assault capabilities. The approach bypasses traditional airborne risks and reflects Ukraine's broader push to replace soldiers with robotic systems for high-danger tasks. Observers note that the successful fielding of such mothership concepts could reshape future combat tactics.

Why it matters

It introduces a novel unmanned assault method that could transform modern warfare.
