Ukraine faces looming winter power and water shortages as Russian attacks intensify
Russia has stepped up strikes on Ukraine's power grid and other utilities, leaving hundreds of thousands without electricity as winter approaches.
Ukrainian authorities are scrambling to shield cities from widespread outages as Russian forces target power plants, transmission lines, fuel stations, food warehouses and water facilities. While many critical sites have been encased in concrete or steel cages, the defenses are not foolproof. The ongoing assaults have already caused repeated blackouts for large segments of the population, raising fears of a severe winter crisis.
