Ukraine protests Finland's decision to host Belarus football match in Helsinki

Ukraine's diplomatic representation in Finland has formally objected to the scheduling of a Nations League match between Finland and Belarus at Helsinki's Olympic Stadium on 29 September. Ambassador Mykhailo Vydoinyk conveyed disappointment to the Finnish Foreign Ministry and urged relocation of the game, referencing Belarus's alignment with Russia and recent hybrid tactics against the EU. Initially, the Finnish Football Association planned a neutral venue, but later cited International Olympic Committee rules, sporting fairness, and the desire for home advantage as reasons to keep the match in Helsinki.

The federation also announced that proceeds from ticket sales will support humanitarian efforts in Ukraine. Finland will host a second fixture against Belarus later in September, with that match slated for Budapest. The protest follows a recent incident involving migrants hidden in a vehicle at the Port of Helsinki, linked to broader Belarus-EU migration issues.
