Ukraine reports massive Russian personnel and equipment losses since 2022 invasion

Ukraine's General Staff says Russian forces have suffered extensive casualties and equipment losses since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022.

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Russian forces have endured substantial personnel casualties and have forfeited large numbers of military hardware since the invasion started in February 2022. The latest update recorded more than two thousand additional casualties in a single day, bringing the cumulative equipment losses to include thousands of tanks, armored combat vehicles, artillery systems, aircraft, helicopters and other assets.

Ukraine withheld its own loss statistics for security reasons. Western think-tank analyses corroborate that Russian losses outpace Ukrainian ones, estimating a casualty ratio of about two to one or higher. A Center for Strategic and International Studies report from early 2026 placed Ukrainian casualties between 500,000 and 600,000, with 100,000 to 140,000 fatalities. President Volodymyr Zelensky has publicly stated that at least 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed, and many more remain missing.

Why it matters

The scale of Russian losses highlights the ongoing intensity of the Ukraine conflict and its broader geopolitical implications.
