Ukraine reports nearly 1.54 million Russian troops lost since 2022 invasion
Ukraine's General Staff says Russian forces have suffered about 1,538,950 personnel losses since the war began, including 1,560 casualties in the latest day.
According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Russian forces have lost approximately 1,538,950 soldiers since the invasion began on Feb. 24, 2022, with 1,560 casualties reported for the most recent day. The statement also enumerated equipment losses, including thousands of tanks, armored combat vehicles, artillery systems, aircraft, helicopters and other assets. Ukraine chose not to publish its own casualty figures, invoking operational security.
One outlet's analyses from Western think-tanks concur that Russian losses are significantly higher than Ukrainian ones, estimating a ratio of roughly 2:1 to 2.5:1. A CSIS report from January 2026 placed Ukrainian casualties between 500,000 and 600,000, with 100,000 to 140,000 fatalities, while President Volodymyr Zelensky has previously cited at least 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers killed.
