Ukraine reports over 1.5 million Russian casualties and massive equipment losses since 2022 invasion

Ukraine's General Staff says Russian forces have suffered 1,559,230 personnel casualties and extensive hardware losses since the war began.

Ukraine's General Staff announced that Russian forces have endured 1,559,230 personnel casualties since the full-scale invasion began on Feb. 24, 2022, with 1,880 of those occurring in the most recent 24-hour period. The same briefing detailed the loss of 12,414 tanks, 25,537 armored combat vehicles, 163,324 transport and fuel vehicles, 51,233 artillery pieces, 2,216 multiple-launch rocket systems, 1,707 air-defence units, 443 aircraft, 356 helicopters, 2,955 unmanned ground vehicles, 35 ships and boats, and two submarines.

Ukraine did not disclose its own casualty figures, citing operational secrecy. One outlet's analyses from Western think-tanks corroborate that Russian losses are substantially higher than Ukrainian ones, estimating a casualty ratio of about 2 to 1 or 2.5 to 1. A CSIS report from January 2026 placed Ukrainian casualties between 500,000 and 600,000, with 100,000 to 140,000 fatalities, while President Volodymyr Zelensky has publicly acknowledged at least 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers killed.
