Ukraine reports over 1.5 million Russian personnel casualties since 2022 invasion
Ukraine's General Staff says Russian forces have lost 1,523,980 troops and extensive equipment since the war began, including 1,540 casualties in the last day.
According to the Ukrainian General Staff, Russian armed forces have suffered 1,523,980 personnel casualties since the invasion began on Feb. 24, 2022, and 1,540 of those occurred in the past day. The report details material losses that include 12,367 tanks, 25,402 armored combat vehicles, 152,782 transport and fuel vehicles, 50,240 artillery pieces, 2,154 multiple-launch rocket systems, 1,669 air-defence units, 443 aircraft, 356 helicopters, 2,727 unmanned ground vehicles, 35 ships and two submarines.
Ukraine did not release its own casualty figures, citing operational secrecy. Independent Western think-tanks concur that Russian losses outpace Ukrainian ones, with CSIS estimating a casualty ratio of about 2 to 1 or 2.5 to 1. A CSIS report from Jan 2026 placed Ukrainian casualties between 500,000 and 600,000, including 100,000-140,000 killed, while President Volodymyr Zelensky has said at least 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed.
