Ukraine reports over 1.5 million Russian troops lost since 2022 invasion
Ukraine's General Staff says Russian forces have suffered about 1,522,440 personnel losses since the war began, including 1,560 casualties in the last day.
On Sept. 23, Ukraine's General Staff released figures indicating that Russian forces have lost approximately 1,522,440 troops since the invasion began on Feb. 24, 2022, with 1,560 casualties recorded in the previous day. The report also enumerated material losses, including 12,367 tanks, 25,387 armored combat vehicles, over 150,000 other vehicles and fuel tanks, more than 50,000 artillery systems, 2,152 multiple launch rocket systems, 1,665 air-defence units, 442 aircraft, 356 helicopters, 2,723 unmanned ground vehicles, 35 ships and boats, and two submarines.
Ukrainian casualties remain undisclosed for security reasons. Independent Western analysts, such as CSIS, contend that Russian losses outpace Ukrainian ones by a margin of roughly two to one. A CSIS study from Jan. 2026 estimated Ukrainian casualties between 500,000 and 600,000, with 100,000 to 140,000 killed. President Volodymyr Zelensky has previously told French media that at least 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers have died, with many more missing.
