Ukraine reports over 1.5 million Russian troops lost and massive equipment casualties since 2022
Ukraine's General Staff says Russian forces have suffered 1,555,700 personnel losses and extensive equipment damage since the invasion began.
On October 13, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine released figures indicating that Russian forces have lost 1,555,700 personnel since the full-scale invasion started on February 24, 2022, with 1,390 of those casualties occurring in the most recent 24-hour period. The report also enumerated equipment losses: 12,412 tanks, 25,534 armored combat vehicles, 162,418 vehicles and fuel tanks, 51,141 artillery pieces, 2,211 multiple-launch rocket systems, 1,704 air-defence systems, 443 aircraft, 356 helicopters, 2,942 unmanned ground vehicles, 35 ships and boats, and two submarines.
Ukrainian casualty figures remain undisclosed for security reasons, though independent analysts from CSIS suggest Russian losses are roughly two to two-and-a-half times higher than Ukraine's, which they estimate at 500,000-600,000 total casualties, including 100,000-140,000 deaths. President Volodymyr Zelensky has previously told French television that at least 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed, with many more missing.
Why it matters
The reported Russian losses highlight the war's scale and its impact on both personnel and military capability.
