Ukraine reports restoration of Starlink speeds after week-long throttling

Ukraine’s defence ministry says Starlink and Starshield connections have returned to normal speeds after a week of reduced performance.

Ukraine’s defence ministry confirmed via Telegram that Starlink and its military counterpart Starshield have resumed normal operating speeds, now delivering connectivity above 400 km per hour. During the previous week, the services were throttled to roughly 160 kph, disrupting the military’s ability to counter Russian attack drones and forcing the cancellation of some missions. The slowdown occurred after Donald Trump announced a deal to buy Russian diesel and urged Kyiv to halt attacks on Russian oil facilities.

While the Ukrainian side stresses the importance of Starlink for frontline communications, it does not rely on the system for long-range drone strikes into Russia. Neither Elon Musk nor US government representatives have taken responsibility for the restrictions, and both have suggested the decision could only have been made by the other. The order originated within the White House, and Trump has said he will act to resolve any lingering issues.

Why it matters

Restored satellite links are crucial for Ukraine’s military communications and defense operations amid ongoing conflict.

How the sides frame it

LOW AGREEMENT

Left-leaning coverage frames the story around EU lawmakers demanding U.S. accountability and warning of European vulnerability to American-controlled satellites, while centrist coverage focuses on the technical restoration of Starlink speeds and notes the absence of responsibility from Elon Musk or U.S. officials.

LEFT

EU legislators press the United States for an explanation and stress Europe’s exposure when American-run satellites are limited.

CENTER

Starlink and Starshield have resumed normal high-speed operation, with no blame assigned to Musk or U.S. officials.

The left emphasises

  • urge the European Commission and President von der Leyen to demand an explanation from the United States
  • warn that Europe remains vulnerable when American-controlled satellites are shut down
