Ukraine runs out of Patriot interceptor missiles, leaving it vulnerable to Russian strikes

Ukraine has depleted its stock of Patriot interceptor missiles, so almost all Russian ballistic missiles in the latest attack went uncaught.

According to a source referenced by one outlet, Ukraine has used up all of its Patriot interceptor missiles, meaning the bulk of Russian ballistic missiles fired in the recent salvo were not intercepted. The attack, which targeted Kyiv’s power facilities and caused power cuts, comes as Ukraine’s air defence has been strained by continuous Russian strikes and the high consumption of costly PAC-3 MSE missiles. Poland has supplied Patriot missiles to Kyiv, a move that sparked domestic criticism because the missiles are expensive and scarce.

President Volodymyr Zelensky previously asked the United States for a larger share of its interceptor stock, but President Donald Trump declined, arguing U.S. reserves are needed for Middle-East operations and allies. The shortage underscores Ukraine’s increasing exposure to ballistic missile attacks amid the ongoing war.

Why it matters

Ukraine's lack of Patriot interceptors heightens its risk of damage from Russian ballistic missiles.
