Ukraine says it hit two Russian S-400 systems in Bryansk overnight

According to the Ukrainian General Staff, overnight strikes on Sept. 16-17 targeted two S-400 long-range air-defence launchers in the Vygonychi district of Bryansk Oblast. The report did not specify how much damage was inflicted or what munitions were employed. In the same communiqué, Ukraine said it also hit a drone base and several military warehouses in Donetsk Oblast, and struck troop concentrations in Kherson and Luhansk Oblasts.

The S-400 system, introduced in 2007 and valued at roughly $500 million, is a key component of Russia's missile-launch capability against Ukraine. Its use forces Kyiv to rely heavily on a small stock of U.S.-made Patriot interceptors, which are the only defenses capable of countering many of Russia's ballistic missiles. President Volodymyr Zelensky has previously said Ukraine will prioritize attacks on Russian missile launchers as Moscow steps up its missile campaign.
