Ukraine sets possible presidential election window within six months of war's end

Ukraine's president says a presidential vote could be held within six months after the conflict stops, provided legal and logistical steps are completed.

President Zelenskyy indicated that once hostilities cease, the country could organize a presidential election within a six-month period. He added that the necessary legislation and election infrastructure could be prepared in as little as 60 days if Russia agrees to a full cease-fire. Zelenskyy also stressed his personal readiness to run again, describing participation as his responsibility. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov previously argued that the Ukrainian leader should not pause the war for electoral purposes, accusing him of using a truce for personal gain.

Why it matters

The timing of Ukraine's next presidential election will shape the country's post-war political landscape and stability.
