Ukraine to Gift Five Captured Russian T-72 Tanks to NATO Museum Partners

Ukraine announced it will donate five disabled Russian T-72 tanks to museums in Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and the Netherlands as proof of Russian aggression.

Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence confirmed that five captured Russian T-72 main battle tanks, rendered non-functional and stripped of explosive components, will be transferred to museums in Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and the Netherlands - all NATO members that have supported Kyiv since the invasion began. Officials say the exhibits will help document the impact of Russian aggression and provide tangible evidence of the conflict to international audiences.

At the same time, Kyiv unveiled the online portal TrophyLab, offering Western researchers and defence firms access to seized Russian hardware for technical study. Open-source monitoring suggests Ukrainian forces have seized roughly 300-500 T-72 tanks, a number likely higher than verified visual records. The donation echoes historic Cold-War efforts by U.S. agencies to obtain T-72s for intelligence, though those earlier attempts yielded limited tactical advantage. By converting the tanks into museum pieces, Ukraine aims to turn former weapons of war into symbols of resistance and historical record.

Why it matters

The donations turn captured weapons into public evidence of Russia's invasion, reinforcing NATO solidarity and enabling study of the equipment.
