Ukraine to sanction 20 more Russian oligarchs after EU drops two
Ukraine's foreign ministry announced plans to add twenty Russian oligarchs to its sanctions list, responding to the EU Council's removal of Mikhail Fridman and Alisher Usmanov.
Andrii Sybiha, Ukraine's foreign minister, announced that the country will place twenty additional Russian oligarchs under sanctions after the EU Council excluded Mikhail Fridman and Alisher Usmanov from its restrictive measures. He explained that a list of more than twenty targets has been prepared and that the president has signed off on adding the new names. Kyiv also intends to request the reinstatement of Fridman and Usmanov, while pursuing parallel actions in national jurisdictions.
Sybiha highlighted that Canada, the United Kingdom, Japan and Australia have already confirmed they will keep the two on their own sanctions lists. The move follows the EU Council's decision to extend sanctions until September 2029, even as it removed the two oligarchs linked to Russia's defence-industrial sector.
Why it matters
The expanded sanctions signal Ukraine's effort to counter perceived EU leniency and maintain pressure on Russian elites supporting the war.
