Ukraine urges allies to keep tightening sanctions on Russia

Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called for continuous, targeted sanctions on Russia, stressing they are already hurting its economy and should be expanded.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said sanctions against Russia should be imposed continuously and with precise, sector-specific focus, as they are already producing economic strain. He highlighted plans to tighten restrictions on the shadow fleet, including a complete ban on maritime services and sanctions on vessel captains, and to block Russian grain shipments through European, especially Baltic, ports. Sybiha also called for greater disconnection of Russian banks from the SWIFT system.

Citing an EU package that targeted about 1,600 entities, he condemned the recent decision to drop oligarchs Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman from the sanctions list, noting the UK will maintain measures against them. Kyiv aims to add more than ten oligarchs linked to the military-industrial complex to future sanctions rounds, arguing that sustained pressure is needed to raise the cost of Russia’s war.

Why it matters

Continued sanctions could further weaken Russia’s war economy and increase pressure on its leadership.
