Ukraine urges calm over US comments on Russian diesel shipments

Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha warned against hasty reactions to recent US remarks about Russia's diesel fuel exports, noting upcoming US midterm elections may shape the rhetoric.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha told RBC-Ukraine that the country must refrain from snap or emotive assessments of recent US commentary on Russian diesel fuel shipments. He recalled that Ukraine’s prudent stance, together with the president and diplomatic corps, previously realigned Ukrainian-American relations after a dispute in the White House. Sybiha added that the looming US midterm elections could affect the tone of public statements, yet Kyiv will keep a cool head and concentrate on bolstering its position and achieving peace.

He cited Donald Trump's October 9 claim that Russia, with US consent, would deliver 300,000 metric tons of diesel immediately, followed by larger shipments in November and beyond, and a Russian pledge of an additional 3 million metric tons. President Volodymyr Zelensky reiterated that such “gifts” to Vladimir Putin will not lead to peace.

Why it matters

The remarks shape expectations about US-Ukraine dialogue amid shifting US political dynamics and Russian fuel deals.
