Ukrainian drone tactics expose U.S. armor vulnerabilities in German exercise

In a recent Combined Resolve field exercise held in Germany, Ukrainian drone crews from the 412th Regiment of Unmanned Systems Forces, dubbed Nemesis, served as the defending force against a U.S. attacking contingent of roughly 3,500 soldiers from the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division. The Ukrainian teams quickly identified American armored vehicles, exploiting dust plumes and visual signatures to guide reconnaissance and explosive-laden drones, which counted as hits even without live munitions.

The simulated strikes forced the U.S. side to rotate fresh units to keep the scenario alive. Over the two-week drill, American forces adapted by spreading out, enhancing camouflage and leveraging electronic-warfare tools, while Ukrainian operators later helped them practice offensive drone tactics. The exercise underscored the difficulty of replicating Ukraine’s combat-hardened drone expertise in U.S. training programs. Pentagon officials are now studying these lessons, testing Ukrainian drones for possible acquisition, and integrating counter-drone systems used in Ukraine into defenses elsewhere, including Iran.
