Ukrainian drones strike Russian Arctic energy plant in Novy Urengoy

Ukraine is said to have deployed ten FP-1 long-range attack drones from Harkov, sending them across the Arctic to hit an energy production site in Novy Urengoy, the so-called “gas capital” of the Yamalo-Nenets autonomous district. The strike marks the longest drone operation reported by Ukrainian forces to date and highlights a widening of their campaign into Russia's northern gas fields, including Yamal LNG, Arctic LNG-2 and the Vostok Oil project on the Taymyr peninsula.

Analysts from The Jamestown Foundation note that Russia's air defenses have struggled to protect these remote facilities, which are crucial for the country's LNG exports to China and other markets. Ongoing drone attacks on ports in the Baltic and Black Sea further underscore the growing pressure on Russia's energy trade routes. Western leaders have urged caution, while former U.S. President Donald Trump has floated the idea of mediating an energy-related cease-fire, a proposal that appears unlikely to succeed.
