Ukrainian investigative reporter Mykhailo Tkach detained in Austria during Vienna assignment
Mykhailo Tkach, head of Ukrainska Pravda’s investigations, was detained by Austrian authorities while on a reporting trip to Vienna.
Ukrainian journalist Mykhailo Tkach, who leads the investigations team at Ukrainska Pravda, was arrested by Austrian law-enforcement officials while conducting a reporting assignment in Vienna with fellow reporter Yaroslav Bondarenko. The newspaper’s editor Sevgil Musayeva condemned the action as unlawful and urged immediate freedom and an official justification. The Ukrainian foreign ministry, through spokesperson Georgy Tykhy, has requested clarification from Austrian authorities and seeks consular access.
Bondarenko’s whereabouts have not been confirmed. Tkach, recognized for exposing corruption around President Volodymyr Zelensky, had recently been honored with the Free Media Awards 2026 in Oslo. This is not his first encounter with detentions, having previously been held by Polish officials in early 2024. Ukrainska Pravda has appealed to international press-freedom groups for support.
Why it matters
The detention raises concerns about press freedom and the safety of journalists covering corruption abroad.
