Ukrainian Louisville Center Yevheniia Putra Discusses War’s Impact and Travel Hurdles

Yevheniia Putra, a 22-year-old center for Louisville, explained how the war in Ukraine shapes her daily life and the long, complex journey required to travel between the United States and Kyiv.

In an interview, Louisville sophomore center Yevheniia Putra detailed the personal toll of the ongoing conflict in her homeland, Ukraine, noting how it permeates even her basketball career. She illustrated the arduous 54-hour journey from the United States to Kyiv, which requires flights to Chicago or New York, a connection to Malaga in Spain, a leg to Poland, and finally a 16-to-18-hour bus ride across a tightly controlled border.

Putra highlighted the difficulty of leaving Ukraine, with Polish officials often holding travelers for several hours. Her path to Louisville began when her agent’s contact, a former Louisville student, passed her profile to the program, leading to a video call with multiple coaches that changed her view of U.S. basketball. Although she once resisted moving to the United States, the opportunity opened a new avenue for her development. The conversation was facilitated by Marco Florio of 13 Basketball Management and published by Swish Appeal.
