Ukrainian missile strike hits Oryol region, likely targeting Proton military-electronics plant

Ukrainian forces launched missiles at Russia’s Oryol region, with early reports indicating the Proton factory that supplies military optoelectronics was the main target.

A missile attack attributed to Ukrainian forces struck Russia’s Oryol region at approximately 5 p.m. local time, prompting a regional alert. Local Telegram feeds documented at least four blasts in Oryol city, followed by reports of dense smoke and emergency vehicle activity. Preliminary analysis from Ukrainian monitoring channels identified the Proton factory—an optoelectronic producer for military hardware—as the likely objective, noting the use of Storm Shadow cruise missiles.

The plant’s output is linked to the S-71 “Kover” air-launched cruise missile, the 9M723 Iskander-M ballistic missile, and the Pantsir-S1 air-defence system. Governor Andrey Klychkov labeled the site a civilian facility located in the Sovetsky district, but details on injuries or structural damage have not been confirmed.

Why it matters

The strike shows Ukraine’s capability to hit Russian defense-industry sites, potentially affecting Russia’s missile production.
