Ukrainian Parliament Approves 90-Day Extension of Martial Law
The Verkhovna Rada voted to prolong Ukraine's martial law for another 90 days, keeping it in force until January 29, 2027.
In a parliamentary session, 293 members of the Verkhovna Rada supported draft law No. 16182, which formalizes the President's decree to extend martial law for an additional 90 days. The legislation becomes active on October 31 and will keep martial law in place until January 29, 2027. Ihor Klymenko, secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, explained that the extension grants necessary powers to state authorities, military command, and local governments to counter armed aggression and safeguard Ukraine's independence and territorial integrity.
President Volodymyr Zelensky presented the decree together with a separate bill, No. 16183, concerning the extension of the general mobilization term. Both proposals are now under consideration by the parliament.
Why it matters
Extending martial law gives Ukraine broader authority to defend against ongoing aggression and impacts civil governance until 2027.
