Ukrainian Parliament to Vote on Law Protecting National Minorities' Education Rights

Ukraine's legislature will consider a bill on minority language schooling, a step praised by Hungarian officials after recent bilateral talks.

Ukraine is set to debate a legislative initiative aimed at safeguarding the right of national minorities to receive education in their mother tongue. Deputy Prime Minister Vsevolod Csentsov announced the bill's upcoming parliamentary consideration, while Hungarian Foreign Minister Orbán Anita highlighted that the measure follows intensive bilateral talks and consultations with Carpathian Hungarian leaders. The Hungarian government expressed satisfaction, noting that recent months have yielded more concrete results for the Carpathian Hungarian minority than a decade of previous efforts.

Prime Minister Magyar Péter also endorsed the draft, emphasizing its reinforcement of legal guarantees for Hungarian-language schooling. The parliament is slated to decide on the proposal by October, marking a notable diplomatic development between Kyiv and Budapest.

Why it matters
