Ukrainian peace team heads home as Trump lifts Russian diesel sanctions

Communications adviser Dmytro Lytvyn said Ukraine's negotiating delegation is already returning from Florida, where talks were altered after President Trump announced the removal of sanctions on Russian diesel fuel, a move Zelensky warned would fund Russia's war.

According to communications adviser Dmytro Lytvyn, Ukraine's negotiating team has already set out for home after an extended first day of peace talks in Florida. He explained that the session lasted longer than planned and adopted a somewhat different character, prompting a pause in the schedule for October 10. The talks, which also included representatives from several European countries, were disrupted by President Donald Trump's announcement that sanctions on Russian diesel fuel would be lifted.

President Volodymyr Zelensky responded by saying the sanction relief would supply Russia with additional revenue to sustain its war effort. He further claimed the negotiations were being used as a diversionary smokescreen for Moscow. Zelensky warned that the decision directly benefits Vladimir Putin, potentially enabling a broader escalation of hostilities. The Ukrainian delegation is now returning to Kyiv amid these diplomatic tensions.

Why it matters

The shift in U.S. policy on Russian diesel could fund Russia's war, undermining Ukraine's diplomatic efforts.
