Ukrainian robot assault in Donbas reverses a year of Russian gains

A surprise Ukrainian robot offensive in the Donbas has reclaimed territory and inflicted heavy Russian losses, challenging Moscow's war aims.

Ukraine’s Operation Vivaldi, launched in May, used heavy bomb drones and tele-operated robots to strike Russian positions behind the front near Liman, north of Donetsk. The 3rd Army Corps reported that the latest phase recaptured 51 km², raising the total reclaimed territory to 176 km², as stated by Brigadier General Andrii Bilețki. Security analysts describe the assault as a severe blow to Vladimir Putin’s objective of seizing the Donbas, noting Ukraine’s secrecy, misinformation campaigns and air-dominance in the area.

The operation forced Russian forces onto more defensible positions and limited their use of drones. Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski praised the robot-enabled tactics and vowed to expand their use, while experts from the Hague Centre for Strategic Studies, the Henry Jackson Society and the Ukrainian Center for Security and Cooperation highlighted the shift in modern warfare logic.

Why it matters

The robot-driven offensive shows Ukraine can regain ground while reducing its own casualties, altering the conflict’s dynamics.
