Ukrainian sea drones hit Sochi promenade, causing injuries and chaos
Uncrewed boats launched by Ukraine struck the Sochi waterfront on the evening of September 9, injuring dozens including children and prompting an evacuation of a concert audience.
On the night of September 9, Ukrainian sea drones—referred to by Russian officials as “uncrewed boats”—detonated on the Sochi waterfront, striking the area where a concert by Tatiana Bulanova was underway at the Festivalny House of Culture. The explosions forced an immediate evacuation, with witnesses recounting a sudden blast wave that knocked people to the ground and caused widespread panic among concertgoers and beach visitors.
Injuries were reported among adults and children, and several victims remain hospitalized. A fire ignited on the promenade but was deemed minor, and the city’s mayor said the beachfront would stay closed until the site is fully cleared. The local investigative committee has launched a criminal case on terrorism charges, alleging that Ukraine intentionally targeted the popular resort zone.
