Ukrainian troops load TechEx drone with far heavier explosives than rated
TechEx officials said Ukrainian soldiers attached a payload of up to seven kilograms to a drone that is officially limited to two kilograms.
TechEx disclosed that Ukrainian forces successfully equipped a Stalker-type fiber-optic drone with an explosive load far exceeding the model's advertised two-kilogram capacity, reportedly between five and seven kilograms, and used it to strike a building. The drones carry additional weight from batteries, cameras and a cable spool that maintains a jam-resistant link to the operator, which limits payload capacity. Combat units often test the boundaries of these limits, leading the manufacturer to make frequent, incremental design changes based on frontline feedback.
TechEx engineers have reduced spool weight through minor adjustments to the cable winding process, striving for a balance between range, durability and payload. The company also designs its drones with interchangeable parts to enable soldiers to repair or reconfigure them in the field. Ongoing soldier input drives weekly updates, as the rapid pace of the conflict can render a product obsolete within months.
Why it matters
It shows how frontline improvisation can outpace manufacturer specifications, influencing future drone design and combat tactics.
