Ukrainian troops repurpose jam-proof fiber-optic drones for ambushes and intel

Ukrainian forces have begun employing fiber-optic drones, which resist electronic interference, in unconventional ways such as staged ambushes and deception. Soldiers let the drones hover or appear inert until an enemy approaches, then trigger explosions to eliminate targets or expose concealed positions. The drones also capture detailed footage of bunker and dugout entrances, supplying precise intelligence for assaults.

Their reliance on a thin data cable shields them from radio jamming but renders them vulnerable to breakage and easy neutralization, especially in cold weather. Despite higher cable costs, Ukraine continues to use them while exploring alternatives like signal repeaters. Russian troops are reported to use comparable tactics, placing drones along roads or in vegetation to strike passing units with little warning.
