UMass Dartmouth freshman running back killed in Providence stabbing
Freshman tailback Marvins Antoine was fatally stabbed in a Providence parking lot early Saturday, and a teammate was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
UMass Dartmouth freshman Marvins Antoine, an 18-year-old tailback, was stabbed to death shortly after midnight on Saturday in a Wendy’s parking lot on Charles Street in Providence. He was declared dead upon arrival at a Rhode Island hospital, while a 19-year-old teammate incurred non-life-threatening head and neck injuries and was also taken to the hospital. Providence Police Major David Lapatin confirmed that a suspect is in custody of the UMass Dartmouth police department and that the case is still under investigation.
The university’s assistant vice chancellor of strategic communications, Ryan C. Merrill, issued a statement mourning Antoine and extending thoughts to his family. Earlier that night the two players had been at a Providence nightclub that was later closed due to overcrowding, after which a fight broke out in the parking area.
