UMNO debates alliance strategy as PAS figures appear at party meeting

During the recent UMNO assembly, several senior PAS officials were in attendance while former UMNO member Hamzah was not present. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the government will take a moderate approach to any disagreements over UMNO’s role in the unity administration, stressing the need for stability. PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man rejected UMNO deputy president Mohamad Hasan’s suggestion to hold a snap state election in Terengganu, urging instead a dissolution of Parliament for a national vote. Hasan, speaking to UMNO’s youth, Wanita and Puteri branches, called for a centrist direction for the party and proposed that PAS demonstrate its cooperation by dissolving the Terengganu state assembly, while UMNO’s own leadership also signalled a push to rebuild Malay support ahead of the 16th General Election.
