Umno Youth urges swift reinstatement of GST, citing higher revenue

Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh called for the immediate return of the Goods and Services Tax, arguing it is more transparent and raises more revenue than the current SST.

At a conference for Umno Youth in Kuala Lumpur, chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh urged the government to reinstate the Goods and Services Tax without delay, claiming it offers greater transparency and yields more revenue than the Sales and Services Tax. He cited data indicating that tax collections under the former system were substantially higher. Akmal highlighted that DAP representatives, such as Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng, have also advocated for GST if it proves more efficient, questioning the prime minister's hesitation.

He welcomed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's recent statement about studying a combined SST-GST framework, interpreting it as an opening for reform. The youth wing emphasized its willingness to support any tax measure deemed beneficial and to oppose those it deems unsuitable.
