UN appoints Trump-backed U.S. agricultural official as new head of World Food Programme

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres accepted the nomination of Luke Lindberg, a senior U.S. agriculture official, to lead the World Food Programme.

United Nations chief Antonio Guterres announced that the organization has accepted the nomination of Luke Lindberg, a senior U.S. agriculture official put forward by President Donald Trump, to become the next Executive Director of the World Food Programme. Lindberg was recommended jointly by Guterres and Qu Dongyu, the head of the Food and Agriculture Organization, in a September 11 letter that listed 54 applicants and identified nine finalists.

A UN spokesperson confirmed that the hiring panel’s recommendation has been forwarded to the WFP board, which is expected to vote on the appointment shortly. The WFP, created as a joint UN-FAO initiative, is confronting hunger for almost 300 million people, a situation worsened by the war in Iran. Although the United States has reduced its contributions under Trump, it remains the programme’s largest donor, often tying aid to U.S.-origin food supplies that support domestic agriculture.

Why it matters

The new leader will steer the world’s largest food-relief agency amid a growing global hunger emergency.
