UN commission labels Israeli actions in West Bank as crimes against humanity

An independent UN commission released a report accusing Israeli authorities and forces of extermination, torture, rape and other crimes against humanity in the West Bank.

An independent United Nations commission published a new report ahead of Israel's scheduled legislative elections, accusing Israeli authorities and military forces of committing crimes against humanity in the West Bank. The allegations include extermination, torture, rape, other forms of sexual violence and persecution motivated by nationality, race and ethnic origin. This follows the commission's earlier conclusion that Israel was perpetrating genocide in Gaza, a charge Israel denies.

Earlier, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights had raised concerns about forced displacement of Palestinians from several West Bank camps in early 2025, hinting at possible ethnic cleansing. The commission also highlighted a dramatic increase in Palestinian fatalities after hostilities intensified in 2023, with casualties rising from a handful to hundreds. Israel has occupied the West Bank since 1967, where millions of Palestinians reside alongside Israeli settlers deemed illegal under international law.

Why it matters

The accusations could influence international opinion and affect Israel's upcoming elections.

How the sides frame it

MODERATE AGREEMENT

Both camps report the UN commission’s accusations, but right-leaning coverage stresses the label of “extermination” and “war crimes,” Israel’s denial and a note that the centrist coverage could not verify graphic details, while centrist coverage focuses on listing the alleged crimes and prior genocide findings.

CENTER

Centrist coverage presents the UN commission’s findings as a factual account of alleged crimes against humanity, enumerating specific abuses and noting earlier genocide conclusions.

RIGHT

Right-leaning coverage highlights the severity of the accusations by using terms like extermination and war crimes, underscores Israel’s denial and condemnation, and points out the lack of independent verification of graphic allegations.

The right emphasises

  • extermination
  • war crimes
  • Israel flatly denies the findings
  • mission in Geneva condemned the document
