UN convenes high-level summit to mark 25th anniversary of Durban anti-racism declaration
The UN General Assembly is holding a high-level meeting in New York to commemorate 25 years since the Durban Declaration and to push for its full implementation.
The United Nations General Assembly is convening a high-level meeting at the UN Headquarters in New York on Monday to mark the 25th anniversary of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action, the most extensive global framework against racism adopted in 2001. Organized by the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the agenda features an interactive panel on youth leadership and statements from UNGA President Khalilur Rahman, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Human Rights High Commissioner Volker Turk, a South African representative, an NGO delegate and a youth representative.
Member and observer states will participate in a general debate to review achievements, confront ongoing challenges such as systemic racism, xenophobia and the Palestinian issue, and adopt a political declaration reaffirming the Durban principles. The session will be livestreamed via UN Web TV in several languages, seeking to mobilize global public support and renew political commitment to fully implement the Durban framework.
