UN envoy warns fleeting peace window in eastern DR Congo amid worsening conflict

UN special envoy Huang Xia told the Security Council that a brief opportunity for peace exists in eastern DR Congo, but fighting continues despite recent diplomatic deals.

Addressing the Security Council, UN special envoy Huang Xia highlighted a narrow window for peace in the conflict-ridden eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, emphasizing recent diplomatic gains by US- and Qatar-led initiatives. Despite a July 2025 ceasefire pledge between the Congolese government and the Rwanda-backed M23 group in Doha, and a US-brokered agreement with Rwanda in December, hostilities on the ground have not abated.

Additional negotiations in August in Switzerland, attended by the United States, Qatar and the African Union, sought to build on these steps. Huang urged all parties to convert commitments into verifiable actions, warning that the opportunity will not remain open indefinitely. The UN will facilitate a Lusaka meeting on October 18, bringing together defence ministers from Burundi, the DRC, Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania to reinforce the peace push.

Why it matters

The conflict threatens regional stability and humanitarian conditions, making timely diplomatic action crucial.
