UN General Assembly adopts declaration to safeguard statehood of at-risk island nations

At the upcoming UN General Assembly, delegates will unanimously adopt a declaration designed to preserve the statehood of small island nations threatened by climate-induced sea-level rise. The measure asserts that loss of land does not equate to loss of a country's legal and political identity within the international system. This initiative responds to concerns that disappearing shorelines could undermine the sovereignty of vulnerable states.

Kamal Amakrane, managing director of the UN’s Rising Nations Initiative, highlighted that each centimetre of sea-level rise will amplify storm intensity, elevate high tides and generate substantial economic losses, requiring ports and airports to be reconfigured. The declaration seeks to provide a legal framework ensuring continued representation and rights for affected nations. It reflects growing recognition of climate change as a security and legal issue on the global stage.
