UN peacekeepers say Israeli flags on Lebanese highway breach resolution
UNIFIL reported that Israeli flags placed on a main coastal road in southern Lebanon violate a U.N. Security Council resolution and called for restraint.
UNIFIL announced that Israeli flags have been erected on the Naqoura-Tyre coastal road, a key artery in southern Lebanon, constituting a breach of U.N. Security Council resolution 1701. The footage, provided by Channel 12 journalist Amit Segal, appears to have been captured from a military vehicle, though the exact timing remains unverified. UNIFIL’s Kandice Ardiel said the flags also appeared in the village of Naqoura, adding that such actions risk provoking further violations.
Israel’s military responded that its forces operate in the area to eliminate Hezbollah threats and act in accordance with international law, stressing they are not targeting the Lebanese state. No immediate comment was received from the Lebanese army. The incident comes amid ongoing Israeli claims that it will not withdraw from the self-declared security zone until Hezbollah is disarmed, a stance echoed by Defence Minister Israel Katz and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Why it matters
The flag placements risk escalating tensions between Israel and Lebanon and challenge a key U.N. cease-fire agreement.
