UN Security Council denounces Houthi strikes on Saudi Arabia and calls for ceasefire
The UN Security Council condemned the latest Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia and demanded an immediate end to hostilities and unhindered humanitarian aid.
On Friday the United Nations Security Council issued a strong condemnation of the intensified Houthi offensive against Saudi Arabia, citing attacks on civilian infrastructure and oil facilities that have injured women and children. French UN envoy Jerome Bonnafont delivered the joint declaration, demanding an immediate cessation of hostilities and adherence to international law and maritime freedom. The council highlighted the growing humanitarian emergency in Yemen, with 138,000 people displaced since August, including 70,000 children, the highest level since a 2022 truce.
UN refugee agency chief Barham Salih warned of increasing crossings to Djibouti, where over 3,500 migrants have arrived, and called for safe, rapid humanitarian access. More than 2.2 million Yemeni children under five are acutely malnourished, half a million suffering severe acute malnutrition. Iran’s alleged backing of the Houthis was denied by President Masoud Pezeshkian, while Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan plan defense talks in response to the council’s warning.
