UN urges Israel to halt raids on Palestinian NGOs and medical centre
The United Nations called on Israel to end recent raids on Palestinian civil society groups and a medical complex in Ramallah, saying the actions intimidate activists.
UN deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq reported that partner organisations have appealed for Israel to stop its crackdown on Palestinian civic space. Israeli forces entered the offices of several NGOs and the Palestine Medical Complex, seizing documents, equipment and detaining staff. The UN human-rights office described the operations as having a chilling effect on human-rights defenders and protection workers.
Why it matters
The raids threaten the ability of Palestinian NGOs and health services to function, raising international human-rights concerns.
