UN warns of rising casualties and gender-based violence amid Haiti gang conflict
UN data show hundreds killed or injured in Haiti's gang violence since January, with over half of deaths caused by Haitian security forces and self-defence groups.
According to the United Nations, the death and injury toll from gang fighting in Haiti has climbed sharply between January and 10 September. More than half of the fatalities stem from operations by Haiti's own security forces and civilian self-defence groups. The UN also reports 230 kidnappings and a surge in sexual assaults against women and girls during the same period. While authorities have made some headway in curbing gangs in Port-au-Prince, the UN peacekeeping contingent remains far below the planned 5,500 personnel, fielding only 1,500 troops.
Why it matters
The escalating violence threatens Haiti's stability and highlights the gap between security needs and UN peacekeeping capacity.
