Unauthorized party accessed CPR data of millions of Danish citizens
An unauthorised actor exploited a company's legitimate CPR-system access to obtain personal details of millions of people in Denmark, the Ministry of Research, Education and Digitalisation said.
The Central Person one outlet reported a major security incident in which an unauthorised individual used a Danish company's legal CPR-system permissions to extract personal information for millions of registered citizens, including names, addresses, CPR numbers and additional details. Christina Egelund, Minister of Research, Education and Digitalisation, said the matter has been briefed to the parliamentary Business and Digitalisation Committee and that a comprehensive assessment is underway with relevant agencies.
The ministry has initiated measures to prevent similar breaches and requested a thorough security audit of the CPR database. The company’s access has been terminated, and the CPR office has filed a complaint with the Data Protection Agency. Police investigations continue, while experts warn that the leaked data could facilitate sophisticated fraud and identity-theft schemes.
