Uncle of teen killed in police collision appeals dismissal of case

The uncle of 16-year-old Sefa, who died after a police vehicle struck his motocross in Élancourt, has filed an appeal against the magistrates’ decision to close the investigation.

Sefa, 16, died following a collision between his unhelmeted motocross and a police vehicle in Élancourt, Yvelines. While the magistrates concluded there was no proof of police fault, his uncle appealed the decision, asserting the investigation was incomplete and based only on officers’ accounts. Attorneys Helin Köse and Pierre Vinot say the two police drivers were heard just once during custody and were never charged or summoned as assisted witnesses.

They also criticize the lack of a crash reconstruction and unanswered questions about the police response to Sefa's alleged refusal to stop. The appeal will be heard by the Versailles Court of Appeal, with the family seeking a reopening of the case.

Why it matters

The appeal highlights concerns over police accountability and the thoroughness of investigations into fatal collisions.
