Bluetooth technology, rooted in a 1942 frequency-hopping invention by Hedy Lamarr and George Antheil, has evolved into two distinct radio-frequency approaches: Classic and Low Energy (LE). Classic operates on 79 channels in the 2.4 GHz ISM band, forming a point-to-point piconet that can reach speeds up to 3 Mb/s, making it suitable for continuous audio streaming and file transfers despite higher power draw and potential latency.
LE, introduced in 2011, uses 40 channels to send short data bursts, offering extended battery life, lower latency, and support for broadcast or mesh networks, which benefits wearables, IoT devices, and industrial monitoring. The Bluetooth Special Interest Group, founded by companies such as Intel, Nokia, IBM, Ericsson and Toshiba, maintains the standards, with the latest Core 6.2 released in November 2025.
