Understanding the overlap between Apple MagSafe and the new Qi2 wireless standard
MagSafe and Qi2 use the same magnetic charging ring and coil, making them interchangeable when devices and accessories support the same speed rating.
When Apple launched the iPhone 12, it added a magnetic ring around the existing Qi coil, branding the feature as MagSafe and raising wireless charging power to 15 W. The same magnetic concept was contributed to the Wireless Power Consortium, which formalized it as the Qi2 standard for broader industry use. As a result, Android phones that incorporate Qi2—like the Google Pixel 10—or use magnetic cases, can attach to MagSafe-branded chargers without issue.
Samsung, for example, promotes magnetic cases rather than built-in Qi2 coils. Both standards now support up to 25 W charging on devices such as the iPhone 17 series and the Pixel 10 Pro XL, provided the accessory also advertises that speed. Consequently, the distinction is largely branding and certification, not technical functionality, as long as users match the wattage ratings.
